Christmas Eve Services

Each of the three Christmas Eve services this year follows a "lessons and carols" plus candle-lighting format, yet each is unique in the telling and singing of the Christmas story.

At 5:00p.m., children and youth will lead prayers and dramatize the scriptural "Markers" from the biblical books of Genesis to Luke along the "Path to Bethlehem". A living Nativity tableau around the manger with costumed characters celebrates our spiritual "arrival" at Bethlehem. Cherub Choir, Choristers, and Singspiration will share favorite anthems and carol verses. An instrumental ensemble including Jim Roeder, Laura Schippers, Joey Newcomb, and Chloë Stodt will support congregational singing. The children are encouraged to bring a gift of non-perishable food items to donate to the Church of Peace Food Pantry.

At 7:00p.m., the Advent candles are the focal point for scriptural and other meditations and carols on the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. The central white Christ candle is rekindled on Christmas Eve to symbolize the light of Christ's renewed presence among us. Campanella Ringers will offer handbell anthems and descants throughout this more reflective service.

At 11:00p.m., the Chancel Choir is joined by harpist, Sara Javaux and organist, Chloë Stodt in offering Robert Hebble's cantata "Glad Tidings of Great Joy". Pre-service music will begin at 10:45p.m. with the singing of favorite congregational carols until service time at 11:00p.m. Those planning to attend this service are encouraged to be seated early in order to enjoy and participate in the singing.

Pastor Allen offers a special Christmas Meditation at the 7:00p.m. and 11:00p.m. services. The money raised through the Christmas Offering provides the primary revenue stream for the Ministerial Assistance programs of the UCC.

Christmas Eve at First Congregational offers something for everyone. Won’t you please plan on attending one of our three candlelight services to thank God for the marvelous gift of Jesus, Prince of Peace and Savior of the Nations?
